A University should be a place of light, of liberty, and of learning” as
Benjamin Disraeli defined the notion of University in the 19th century. The
concept as he held, however, is relevant to the 21st century. The Faculty of
Humanities and Social Sciences of ISU reinforces this idea of University, and
provides the students with the required opportunities for transforming them into
learned, enlightened and liberal humans who are essential to build a “knowledge
society”. At present, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences governs the
Department of English under which two programs-- BA Honors in English and MA in
English Literature and Cultural Studies-- are running. Besides, the Faculty
helps other Departments under the Faculty of Business Studies and Faculty of
Engineering and Technology to enhance their students’ English skills required to
cope with their own curricula and texts. The Faculty of Humanities and Social
Sciences builds the linkage between pedagogical needs and real-world situations,
thereby ensuring quality education. In addition, the Faculty along with other
Faculties of ISU is working for smooth governance, extension, development, and
research so that the university finds it easy to attain its accreditation from
Bangladesh Accreditation Council. In short, the Faculty aims at fulfilling the
vision and the mission of the university– serving the nation by offering quality
education for producing skilled graduates for the nation in the 21st century.
